Description

Although Breckenridge began life as an original Wild West town, it’s developed over the years into one of the USA’s finest ski resorts and attracts mountain enthusiasts from all over the world. Its five peaks include slopes for all abilities, and its altitude affords dependable snow coverage. Better still, the ski schools are top notch, the people are welcoming and it's easy to find great value dining options with hearty portions.

Overall, the après-ski scene here is not hugely lively compared to our favourite Austrian and French resorts, however there are a couple of bars with vibrant, welcoming atmospheres and some charming old west spots to grab a drink. There is also a great range of restaurants in town to choose from.

Holidaymakers interested in Breckenridge can fly from London to Denver, from which the resort is some 2 hours away.

Within the resort itself, it's not too hard to walk around town and free buses are available.

Getting There

When to Go

Breckenridge’s ski season runs from November through until the end of April, and the resort’s high altitude means the snow coverage is typically exceptional. (This does come at a price, though, and visitors arriving in from lower altitudes often have to acclimatise!) Breckenridge sees an average snowfall of over seven and a half metres of fresh snow each year – evidence of the resort’s suitability for skiing and snowboarding all winter long. January’s temperatures are the coldest, with chilling winds and regular fresh snowfall.

On the accommodation costs, Breckenridge is at its busiest and most expensive during weekends and public holidays such as Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving – and visiting outside of these times is a sure fire way to ski and save on the slopes. Many visitors find the best prices around the early and late weeks of the season, though of course you do have to be mindful that the lower slopes aren’t always open around these times.

As one of North America’s most popular ski resorts, Breckenridge offers terrain for a wide variety of levels of skier and snowboarder, and this makes it a popular destination. Lift queues can be long and the main street gets busy with traffic – so choosing when to go is key. The months of January, February and March typically see the heaviest snowfall, but aside from this there are other factors to consider when deciding when to go.

Early Season

Through November and early-to-mid December – before the main ski season visitors arrive – Breckenridge is pretty peaceful and quiet. Although this is great for the lift queues, you do need to be aware that not all the runs will be open. Christmas and New Year in Breckenridge are magical times, with pretty lights adorning the streets and festive après ski in the bars. The only downside is the business, as Breckenridge is a popular destination over the US’ busy holiday season.

Mid Season

When January ticks round in high-altitude Breckenridge, things calm down noticeably. Slopes are less busy, lift queues shorter, and down in town, the bars and restaurants enjoy a post-holiday lull. For these reasons, it can be a good time to travel over – with regular dumps of fresh snow keeping the slopes in amazing condition. Not only are all the pistes typically open at this time, but many of the resort’s hotels offer tempting accommodation deals to keen visitor numbers up. Eagle-eyed snow-lovers keen to tick Breckenridge off their list are well-advised to keep lookout after the 3rd January – when the festive season revellers depart – but do bear in mind the low temperatures! Later in the month, the Martin Luther King weekend means snow-lovers flocking to Breckenridge for another public holiday. After that it’s clearer again following the President’s Day weekend in mid-February.

Late Season

April is a lovely time to visit Breckenridge, as when spring ticks around, temperatures begin to climb again and visitors can lose those valuable thermal layers. Skiers and snowboarders visiting during this sunny time of the winter ski season enjoy freshly-groomed pistes in the morning and softer, slushier snow conditions as the days wear on. But of course, the resort’s welcoming bars and cafes come into their own for sun-soaked après ski. Spring break across the US means April can be busy in the resort, with parents whisking their kids off to the slopes for spring break.

Where to Stay

Getting around

Apres

While you won’t find Val d’Isère or St Anton-style après here, Breckenridge does have plenty of places to grab an après-ski drink, from quiet spots to more lively establishments.

Speaking of lively, one of the more vibrant venues to check out is the Gold Pan Saloon, a true old west bar with great DJs most weekends. The place has plenty of historic charm to boot – in fact, it’s famous for having the oldest liquor license west of the Mississippi.

If you’re really craving a dance, one of the best places to head is Cecelia’s Après Ski Nightclub, with nightly DJs and the largest d-floor in Breck.

For a leisurely beverage, the simply named Après Bar serves excellent hand-crafted beer, whiskey and cocktails. Other great bets include Modis (brilliant cocktails) and Brooklyn’s Tavern and Billiards (great for getting away from the crowds).

On the hill, it’s hard to go past the infamous T-Bar at the base of Peak 8: a great place to grab an après drink and soak up some rays on the patio.

Eating out

Breckenridge is home to some excellent dining options for a range of groups and budgets.

The Italian-American Blue River Bistro is brilliant for families, with an impressive kids menu and a fun atmosphere. Relish, meanwhile, plates up “Colorado inspired cuisine” using the freshest local produce. Both the food and the service is exceptional here, and while it may be pricey it’s certainly worth it.

For a group of hungry mates looking for a cheap feed, Empire Burger serves tasty onion rings, tacos and, of course, delicious burgers.

Activities

For non-skiers, Breck presents a multitude of pastimes to enjoy, from winter holiday staples to some unique activities.

Visitors can explore the beautiful National Forest surrounding Breckenridge on snowmobiles, or one might opt for an adorable Husky sled ride.

To learn more about the town’s 150 year history, going all the way back to the gold rush age, you can take a tour of Breck’s Historic District, which includes a look at some old buildings that are said to be haunted.

On the more modern side of things, the town has a brilliant recreation center with gymnasium, indoor tennis courts, lap and leisure pools, water slide, racquetball court, basketball courts, indoor rock-climbing wall, an indoor track, weight training and cardio equipment.

A trip to the resort’s tourist office will offer lots of useful information on resort activities, but here are just a few ideas to start you off.

Getting around

Family ski

With a diverse range of terrain and attractive main street, Breckenridge has plenty to offer families, and works well for parents hitting the slopes with their kids. Here, you’ll find swift lifts and excellent snow coverage, minimal lift queues and a massive range of learner-friendly slopes to choose from. Ski schools in Breckenridge have an outstanding reputation for quality, and there’s a great range of restaurants with child-friendly menus to sample. The resort gets quite heavy traffic, so parents are advised to choose accommodation off the main drag.

Parents in search of childcare options in Breckenridge can turn to a number of different services, depending on location and budget. Around peak 8 and peak 9, services such as the Village Child Care and Beaver Run welcome little ones from two months to four years old, and run from half past eight in the morning through to four pm, all weel long. Parents can choose hourly programmes or gull-day services, depending on the kids of childcare they want, and advanced booking is advised as the services are in high demand. For kids ready to hit the snowy slopes, the Lil’ Rippers program is the perfect introduction for youngsters on skis or snowboard.

Most of the family-friendly terrain in Breck can be found around peaks 8 and 9 (along with the childcare services to match). For children mastering their first turns, peak 9 is where you’ll find the majority of the gently learner-friendly terrain, but there’s plenty of scope here for gentle progress onto more challenging ground too. Also on peak and peak 9, the dedicated Family Leaning Zones are the perfect place for parents to enjoy a little quality time with the kids on the snow. Here, the slopes are cordoned off to advanced skiers and boarders and the terrain is given over to parents with youngsters. For parents in search of slightly more challenging slopes to ski with the kids, peak 7 also offers plenty of scope for further progression.

We can’t talk of family-friendly facilities in Breck without mentioning the wonderful Kids Adventure Zones. You’ll find them across the peaks and valleys of the resort, and they offer the perfect opportunities to just have fun with the kids on the slopes. There are speed traps to check your pace and plenty of challenging hits hidden among the trees – all you need to test the kids and make progress on the snow. Two of the best ones can be found around peak 9 - Riperoo’s Forest and the Haunted Forest – offering beautiful terrain rolling down through the glades. Dragon Tail on peak 8 is another great place to ski as a family, with an exciting castle, and others to look out for during your ski holiday in Breckenridge include CJ’s Cabin and Rip’s Ravine – where a whole load of child-friendly terrain and adventure await.

Away from the groomed pistes, there’s plenty to do for families in Breckenridge if the kids need a change of scenery or if bad weather closes in. The Gold Run Alpine Coaster is a coaster trail running down the mountainside, where parents and kids alike can enjoy high-speed thrills on the snow. You can ride single or in tandem with a friend or parent, and control your speed to enjoy the ride to the full. Also worthy of note, the Breck Flyer Zipline at the foot of Peak 8 is another perfectly family-oriented activity to keep the kids amused and entertained off their skis.

Down in town, further family facilities to explore include the adventurous walking tours which take you through the colourful history of Breckenridge before the skiers and snowboarders arrived. Alternatively, the Mountain Top Children’s Museum below peak 9 offers a whole range of engaging arts, crafts and fancy dress activities. For older children and teens, head over to Downstairs at Eric’s on Main Street. This family-friendly sports bar and arcade offers everything you need to while away a few hours off the groomed slopes. You’ll find a long child-friendly menu, and amusements like pinball machines and arcade games for the kids to have fun with.

Group Ski

Breckenridge, or ‘Breck’, as it’s often known, has plenty to offer large groups of skiers and snowboarders in search of adventure on the snowy slopes. This US ski resort offers groomed pistes soaring to a mighty four thousand metres above sea-level, and altitude sickness can pose a problem. One solution for groups hoping to avoid the issue is to hit a few lower-level resorts first, and Vail and Steamboat fit the bill perfectly. Once safely arrived in Breckenridge, however, you’ll soon settle in – with swift lifts and an exceptional snow record making Breckenridge one of the Unites States’ must-ski destinations.

Breckenridge’s terrain parks are widely considered among the finest in the States, with hits and kickers to suit even the most advanced freestylers. Away from the groomed terrain parks, Breckenridge’s pistes are perhaps most ideally suited to beginner and intermediate-level skiers and snowboarders – the amount of groomed runs is a little limited for eager experts keen to cover the miles. It’s a very family-friendly resort, too, with a wide range of services and amenities aimed at groups of families with youngsters in tow.

Groups of families hit Breckenridge for the gentle terrain and spectacular Rocky Mountain scenery, and the resort’s infrastructure is well set up for kids. You’ll find specially set-aside nursery slopes where kids can learn in comfort, family zones and adventure parks for children mastering their first turns on the slopes. The lower and mid-mountain areas offer rolling boulevarded pistes with plenty of space, and a range of terrain parks with hits and kickers for all levels. The ski schools here are also excellent, and you’ll find classes and clinics in everything from the basic pizza shape to moguls, park and powder skiing and snowboarding.

For eager diners and thirsty après skiers, Breckenridge works wonderfully well. Here, groups can enjoy a wide range of cuisine, with eclectic and welcoming après ski venues for a well-earned drink at the end of a hard day on the snow!

Childcare

Breckenridge is home to some excellent childcare providers, including three great childcare centers that offer fun indoor and outdoor activities for the little ones.

The Peak 8 Center is located behind the top gondola terminal at the base of Peak 8 and comprises four classrooms for children aged 8 weeks to 5-years-old.

The Village Center lies in the Village Plaza near the Quicksilver chairlift, with three classrooms for kids aged 8 weeks to 5-years-old.

The Beaver Run Center resides next to the Beaver Run Superchair and provides top-notch care for little ones aged 8 weeks to 3-years-old.

The Piste

The resort sits at an impressive 2926m above sea level, with the slopes reaching up as far as 3960m at the top of peak 8. With this in mind, Breckenridge is a fantastic snow-sure bet, however there is a slight risk of altitude sickness for visitors coming directly from a low altitude, and the resort is not recommended for very young children.

Breckenridge’s ski area is quite divided up. There’s an excellent nursery slope area at the foot of Peak 9, and the areas around peaks 7 and 10 offer wonderful blue pistes that are great for intermediates. Peak 8, the highest point, is recommended for confident, advanced skiers, and for those truly seasoned experts there are some wonderful black diamond runs and fantastic off-piste potential to enjoy.

Freestyle skiers and boarders will no doubt be overjoyed at the prospect of Breck's four award-winning terrain parks and 22' superpipe, which are consistently ranked in the world's top tiers by industry leaders.
