Resort Grimentz Resort Grimentz Resort Grimentz

Description

Grimentz is part of the Val d'Anniviers area. The ski pass covers 220km of piste across five different areas/resorts: Grimentz-St Jean, St Luc, Chandolin, Zinal and Vericon. It’s on the opposite side of the valley to Crans Montana and only a very short distance from Zermatt and Verbier. Grimentz was described by The Sunday Times as a “boutique” resort like Ste-Foy and Vaujany.

If you like ancient, quiet, totally unspoilt mountain villages together with a modern lift system then this is the place for you. In addition to the piste skiing the area is famous for its fabulous off piste skiing and its mountain touring. For magnificent views just off one the pistes in Grimentz there is a stunning 360 degree panoramic view of the Imperial Crown – five 4000m peaks – Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn, Dent-Blanche and the Matterhorn. The village itself has tiny cobbled streets and in some places they are so narrow that the roofs of the chalets almost touch each other in the middle.

The skiing in Grimentz is mainly between 1340m to 3000m although the vast majority of the skiing is above 2100m thus the area is snow secure. The area has varied skiing from open pistes to forest runs and steep blacks to easy blues. There is a great snow park at 2500m in Grimentz and additionally one in Zinal. The lift system is modern with Gondolas, Cable cars, a funicular in St Luc and fast six man chairlifts.

Apres

Apres ski is not really what people come to Grimentz for, rather they are interested in the easily accessible off piste and traditional charm of the village. That said, there are a few bars here if you fancy a couple of beers in the evening!

Chez Floriaz is a popular après spot and has a large sun terrace which gets quite busy from around 3pm. There are regular parties throughout the season and live music every now and again so have a look on their website to see if anything is going on when you’re out there: http://www.florioz.ch/Soirees.html

Le Country Pub is definitely a stereotypical Alpine après bar with lots of wood and plenty of beer on tap. It is very popular with the locals but everyone is welcoming and they offer a good range of wines by the glass. http://grimentzcountrypub.e-monsite.com/

The Shaddock is the only disco in town and opens until 3am if you’re in the mood for dancing and is actually very popular for such a quiet resort!

Eating out

The Arlequin has a good mixture of traditional dishes from the Valais canton as well as excellent Italian dishes, with pizza and pasta making up a good proportion of the menu. If you want a real taste of Switzerland then head down on Wednesday for their rosti nights and indulge in one of the regions most traditional meals.

Becs de Bosson is another traditional restaurant which is part of a small, family run hotel. You can enjoy a few après ski beers here as well, and they have an excellent après offer of raclette with a glass of wine which is perfect to keep you going until supper time. Main courses start at around CHF20 and go up to around CHF 45 for a fillet steak with all the trimmings. http://www.becsdebosson.ch/EN/lacarte.htm

The Cristal is a slightly larger hotel with an excellent restaurant that is open to non-residents and is very popular. This season they have started a special tea time special with a huge variety of local cakes, pastries and teas on offer from 3-6pm – perfect to recharge your batteries after a hard day skiing!

Bendolla is a great option for families and has a mixture of self service and table service to keep prices down if you’re on a budget. It has free wifi and is very close to the ESF kindergarten if you want to pop in for a coffee or a snack whilst your children are on the slopes. Large groups can be easily accommodated and booking isn’t always necessary as it is a huge establishment! http://www.rma.ch/anniviers/switzerland/ski-valais/bendolla-mountain-restaurant-grimentz-2110.html

Activities

Grimentz is a popular Alpine resort and there are lots of things to do off the slopes. Mountain walking is very popular here, as it is in the rest of Switzerland, and there are around 30kms of trails in the immediate vicinity and another 100kms or so in the valley. Guides are available if you would like a professional to accompany you and give you a bit more information about the mountains, so just ask at the tourist office. Snowshoes are also available if you would like to embark on some of the 120kms of snowshoe trails at your disposal!

For those who fancy themselves as budding figure skaters then you can have a spin on the local ice rink in the centre of the village between 10 in the morning and 10 at night completely free of charge! You will have to pay for your skate hire but it’s a fairly nominal charge. If the weather closes in then you can enjoy a swim at the indoor swimming pool and rest any aching muscles in the sauna!

Tobogganing is as popular in Grimentz as it is anywhere and you can enjoy a combined 15kms of runs in the immediate vicinity. Sledges can be hired in town and taken up on the main gondola to allow you to enjoy the longest continuous run into the village, which is over 4kms long, or you can continue past the village and do a different one of 6kms down to St Jean!

Tandem paragliding is available in both Grimentz and nearby Zinal if the weather is clear and starts at around CHF150 for a tandem flight which lasts about an hour. It is extremely dependent on weather so do book before you go as there are limited slots available each week!

Childcare

Grimentz is a fairly quiet village with most people coming here to enjoy the extensive off piste rather than stick to the pistes. The village is quite spread out on a steep slope which doesn’t make it ideal for youngsters but there are still a few things to keep children entertained!

Ski school is the obvious choice and you can have a look at our dedicated page for a few more details on that. Children aged three and over will be able to enjoy the snow in a mixture of lessons and organised play. If you want to enjoy the mountains with your children then a great option is to head for one of the four local toboggan runs! These range from short slopes to a winding track from the village to St Jean which is around 6kms away and then you can get a free bus back to the village.

If the weather closes in then you can head along to the local indoor swimming pool which has a 9m long childs’ pool and is open every day between 2-8pm, apart from Wednesday when it is closed.
