Getting around

Apres

Après Ski in Crans Montana is a fairly low-key affair but there are still a few great places where you can let your hair down and enjoy some live music or relax and just have a chat with a beer or a glass of wine.

For those wanting something quite lively then the best place to head is Zerodix which has a DJ every evening until 8pm, lots of room to have a beer and a dance and occasionally sees everyone’s favourite resident, Sir Roger Moore, pop in for a glass of champagne! Big events like Valentine’s Day or Mardi Gras are celebrated in style with the music starting at around 3.30pm. If you’re after a bite to eat then you can burgers and salads a little earlier on in the day or finger food like ribs or nachos during après ski hours. - http://www.zerodix.ch/

Monkis Bar is a great place for a few beers at the end of the day and they have regular theme nights with great fancy dress so do check before you head out if you want to join in! The bar opens at 4.30 and stays open all the way until 2am with food being served from opening until 1am to soak up some of the alcohol.

The George and the Dragon pub on the Crans side of the town is a home away from home for a lot of the seasonnaires in the resort. You can find plenty of familiar beers on tap as well as a pub quiz and big parties for events like St Patrick’s Day. Traditional pub grub is also served during the evening if you want a taste of home

Brasserie la Marmotte offers good value food and drink for the après ski crowd, with the kitchen opening from 5-7pm. The Marmotte actually have their own selection of beers which are all 100% natural and free of artificial additives; they say they are hangover free but this is yet to be confirmed!

Amadeus is just under the Olympic Hotel and has been running for a solid 21 years now, which speaks volumes for its fun atmosphere! Whilst it may be in need of a bit of refurbishment there is no doubting the energy you can find here from tea time on a week night. The ‘specialities’ of the bar revolve around shots so it’s best avoided if you just fancy a couple of beers and a friendly chat.

Pacha is the most popular nightclub in Crans Montana and is open 7 days a week for late night dancing! The club has being going strong since 1977 and has moved with the times in terms of its look and feel with a distinctly modern feel and a superb sound system. The club has events throughout the season and sees DJs flying in from all over Europe to take a turn on the decks. The dance floor doesn’t really get busy until well after midnight so if you find yourself in here you might find skiing a bit of a chore the following day!

Eating out

Crans Montana has a fairly exclusive reputation with famous past residents including Sophia Loren and Michel Roux, as well as current names like Kathy Burke, Sergio Carcia and Sir Roger Moore! The restaurant scene is suitably well-established as the resort is popular throughout the year with golfers and mountain bikers during the summer as well as well-heeled skiers in the winter.

On the Mountain

Merbe – Situated just by the mid-station of the Crasn Cry cable car this is a traditional Swiss mountain restaurant at 2000m which has a fantastic little terrace to enjoy when the sun is out. You dont have to be skiing to get here as it is also accessed by one of the hiking trails which makes it a perfect destination for non-skiers to get to. +41 27 481 22 97

Chetzeron – This is a far more modern affair that Merbe with a lot of stone and glass instead of traditional wood. Prices are quite high but when the sun is out on the terrace you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Main courses are around CHF40 but you can get a cheese fondue for CHF30 which is slightly better value! Plenty of people enjoy the lounge bar here with its open fire and stunning views before donning the skis once more for the home run into the town. http://www.chetzeron.ch/

Pepinet – Another classic Swiss restaurant that is easily accessible for those on skis but it is quite small with space for only around 30 if the weather closes in. However, the terrace can hold up to a hundred people and as it’s in the sun, this restaurant really gets popular! The food is traditionally Swiss with excellent croutes being the house speciality – essentially a very swish version of cheese on toast often involving and egg and some ham. +41 78 722 43 90

In Town

Pas de l’Ours Hotel – This hotel has a number of restaurants but if you really want to push the boat out then head to their main venue called L’Ours for a truly gastronomic experience. Prices are not cheap, with starters from around CHF45 and main courses at around CHF65-CHF80pp but you can be assured of an experience that you won’t forget in a hurry! http://www.pasdelours.ch/hotels/hostellerie-du-pas-de-lours/restaurants/gastronomique-l-ours

Le Thai – Unsurprisingly, this is the local Thai restaurant in Crans Montana and offers an excellent takeaway service. It’s a great option for larger families who would prefer to stay in a chalet rather than head across town for an evening out. Main courses are around CHF35 if you eat in or 20% less if you grab a take away. http://www.le-thai.ch/en/take-away/

Cher Mignon – This restaurant offers a half-way house between the high-end standards of the L’Ours and a more traditional Swiss restaurant. The menu uses fairly familiar ingredient combinations but with a bit of a twist and slight Asian-fusion style. If you’re after a fondue or a raclette then you will be better off elsewhere but if it’s city-centre restaurant food you want then give Cher Mignon a call. +41 27 483 25 96

La Dent Blanche – One of the more traditional restaurants in Crans Montana, specialising in very traditional Swiss food like rostis, raclette and fondue – perfect for a real taste of Switzerland! It’s one of the most popular restaurants in town so you will need to book at the beginning of the week if you want to head there on the chalet hosts night off. +41 27 481 11 79

Activities

Crans Montana is a popular resort throughout the year and has a good number of off-slope activities to enjoy if you fancy a change from skiing or boarding all day. In fact, it is one of the very best resorts to consider if you’ve got non-skiers in the party! There are almost 170 shops to explore with a broad range of exclusive labels and more familiar high street names, 70 restaurants on the slopes as well as in the town, a cinema which shows all of the latest releases, and a casino to indulge any James Bond fantasies. Actor Roger Moore is one of many celebrities who maintain chalets in the town so keep an eye out for the real deal walking to the lifts!

Husky sledding is popular throughout the Alps and especially so in sunny Crans Montana where you can explore the length of the valley from the comfort of the sled or you take the reins yourself and experience life as a driver rather than just as a passenger!

Snow tubing has become increasingly popular over the past few years but it is not for the faint of heart. It essentially involves throwing yourself down a piste on top of a reinforced lilo whilst wearing a helmet, so perfect for any adrenaline junkies but not advisable for younger children!

Tobogganing is great fun in and is really popular amongst those who don’t want to strap on a pair of skis all day but still want to experience the mountains and a bit of speed! The toboggan run is 6kms long, one of the longer in Switzerland, and you can rent a toboggan from the lift station for around £10 for an afternoon. It’s a brilliant event for the whole family to enjoy, especially when the sun is shining. - http://snow.crans-montana-aminona.com/sledding/

Snow scooting is another activity that is great for families or for couples wanting to try something a little bit different. A three-hour trip around the forests is around £50pp and includes hire of the fantastic snow scooters and a guide. The scooters are essentially beefed up versions of the ones you see children using, with huge snow tyres and a much bigger wheel base. Contact the tourist office for more details or to book a session.

Paragliding is a great way of seeing Crans Montana from a totally new angle and is very popular here due to an excellent weather record. Prices start from around £100pp for a tandem flight but group discounts are available and if you’re really keen you can even some lessons. Booking in advance is essential and you do need to be a bit flexible and be ready to go when the weather allows it. Wrap up warm and remember to take you camera but you can often buy some incredible shots from the instructors who all have very high definition cameras for excellent stills and video! - www.crans-montana.ch/ete/en/paragliding

There are two serious snow shoeing itineraries to experience Crans Montan by foot, one in the Plaine-More area and the second over towards Petit Mont-Bervin. Each route is fully signposted but you can also hire a guide if you would like a bit of information about this beautiful area. Snow shoes and walking poles can be hired in town if you don’t have your own.

Crans Montana is a stylish Swiss resort in the Valais Canton. It is not particularly family friendly with a more adult atmosphere and very changeable snow conditions. That said, there are still a few fun options for children to enjoy in the town and the surrounding area so a week here with the family is certainly not out of the question.

During the winter months, the Crans Montana golf course transforms into the ski kindergarten area with lots of fun activities like snowtubing, slides, a small piste, treasure hunts and lots of sledging. Some of the activities are free, like the sledging, but you have to pay for others like the snowtubing which is CHF5 for 45 minutes. The magic carpet lifts are available for a reduced rate of CHF10 per day which is perfect for total beginners before they take to the slopes and need to pay for a full lift pass.

There are organised sledging races throughout the season which are free to enter, as well as night sledging and snowtubing during half term which goes on until 9.30pm. The whole area is designed to be a winter wonderland for the youngest alpine adventurers but there is also a new snowpark in the Cry d’Er area which is perfectly set up for older teenagers eager to be the next Shaun White.

Another fun option is to pay a visit to one of the two ice rinks in Crans Montana – one in Crans and one in Montana. You can choose to give ice hockey a go or try your hand at figure skating or even curling! Whatever you want to try, there is equipment for hire throughout the year as well as instructors to get you on your way. Here is a list of the recommended hire shops for ice sports - -----http://www.crans-montana.ch/hiver/en/kids/ice_skating ? Equipment_hire – just have a word with one of the sales staff to find out which is closest to your chalet!

Older children can also give air boarding a go – this is not for the faint hearted and does require use of a helmet but is great fun and very popular! http://www.crans-montana.ch/hiver/en/activities_/sport_leisure_winter/airboard

A less active experience, and one that is actually very popular with young children when the weather closes in, is a trip to the model railway museum in the heart of Crans Montana. There are over 1300 models on display, many of them working, as well as an excellent shop to pick up a souvenir from. http://www.trains-miniatures.ch/
