Half Term

February is the most popular month to hit the slopes with guaranteed snow in almost every resort. Many families are restricted to travelling during school holidays, therefore half term becomes the busiest week of the season. The slopes are undoubtedly busy during this week but the majority of the resorts have a modern lift system so you shouldn’t have to be queuing for too long to get you up the mountain.

This increase in demand does mean that the holiday is that bit more expensive, with the prices of flights and accommodation at a higher rate. Although there are plenty of options of where to stay, booking early is advisable especially if you are a larger group and wanting to stay in the same property. It is not only accommodation that gets booked up, childcare places and ski school can also sell out very quickly, so if you want these make sure you plan early to avoid missing out.

Most resorts can accommodate families and have good childcare options and beginner friendly slopes, however it is apparent that some resorts are more family friendly than others. Some of our favourite resorts for half term include:

Les Menuires

Les Menuires has been awarded ‘Famille Plus’ label from the French Tourism Office which means it has a good amount of activities and services for children and families. These activities include tobogganing and dog sledding. The resort also has excellent childcare available including Club Piou-Piou and Mini Clubs run by ESF. There are also several private nanny services in resort who offer more flexible levels of care.

Les Menuires is located in the Three Valleys. The resort offers cheaper accommodation than the likes of Meribel, Val Thorens and Courchevel so it makes a good choice for families looking to keep a hold of their budget but also wanting a large ski area.

Avoriaz

Avoriaz is located in the Portes du Soleil which is one of the largest ski areas in the Alps. Avoriaz is a small and compact traffic free resort making it an attractive choice for families looking for a hassle-free holiday as no accommodation is too far from the slopes and the car-free centre provides a safe environment for children.

Avoriaz offers a good range of non-skiing activities for families including horse-drawn carriage rides, sledding, ice skating and the brilliant Aquariaz Water Park which has amazing facilities including gentle river rapids, wet and wild half-pipes, paddling pools for toddlers, climbing walls and even an open-air hot tub!

Les Deux Alpes

Les Deux Alpes is a popular choice for both young skiers and families alike. The resort has great glacier skiing for all abilities and has some excellent value catered chalet packages so makes a good choice for families wanting to keep hold of their budget!

Les Deux Alpes neighbours Alpe d’Huez and plans are in place to build a gondola connecting the two which will be an amazing edition for both resorts!

Similarly to many other resorts, Les Deux Alpes has a good range of non-skiing activities available throughout the resort including swimming, ice skating, bowling and cinema.

Other excellent resorts for families include La Plagne, La Rosiere, Les Gets and Obergurgl!
