March is the start of spring skiing in the Alps, and it’s a wonderful time to visit the mountains. The days are becoming longer, the weather is slightly warmer than the January and February weeks, and the snow is typically still falling hard across the peaks and valleys.

March offers value for money on the slopes

Ski holiday prices offer great value for money in March, with tempting offers on lift passes and ski hire typically available. Early-bird skiers and snowboarders can look ahead to March with assurance that the value for money is good, and place their bookings with wonderfully helpful group discounts.

It’s also a good time to book your ski holiday last-minute, when tour operators and chalet companies drop their prices to sell the remaining beds each week.
Enjoy quiet slopes over March in the Alps

Compared to the busy festive season or the popular half term week, March is a pretty peaceful time to enjoy the Alps. With UK kids safely tucked away in school, skiers can enjoy having the slopes to themselves. Don’t be caught out, though – there is a French school holiday in early March, during which the lift queues can be a little longer than normal.

The perfect time for groups of friends to visit the Alps

For groups of friends and family able to escape to the Alps outside of the busy and popular peak weeks like half term or Easter, March represents an ideal time to go skiing or snowboarding. There’s a wonderful range of welcoming catered ski chalets brilliantly well suited to groups, with chalet sizes from 6 beds to around 14 beds particularly popular.

Booking a catered ski chalet for your group on an exclusive use basis – with no other guests apart from your friends or family in the property – offers a level of privacy that many people enjoy. But hotels also work well for groups hitting the Alps in March, with a less rigid structure to the day and a more informal dining programme. We’re able to offer both catered ski chalets and chalet-hotels, and we’re happy to share insight into the best set up for your group ski holiday.

March brings live music to the snowy slopes

When March ticks round and spring comes to the Alps, ski resorts welcome skiing and snowboarding music-lovers for a dazzling range of exciting gigs and festivals. Music festivals like Rock The Pistes in the Portes du Soleil and Tomorrowland in Alpe d'Huez are both regular features in the March gig calendar in the Alps, and there are concerts, gigs and festivals to suit all tastes.

Where to ski this March?

To make the most of spring in the Alps, high altitude, lively après ski and diverse terrain are key factors to consider. With this in mind, resorts such as Zermatt in Switzerland work wonderfully well for advanced skiers in search of steep slopes. In France, Alpine destinations like Courchevel, Meribel, Val d’Isere and Val Thorens are ideal. Austria doesn’t offer quite as good a range of high-altitude resorts, but for great March skiing, Solden, Mayrhofen and Ischgl fit the bill nicely for many groups.
