Description

Set in a wide, remote valley near the Italian-Swiss border, Livigno offers a winning combination of high altitude, good extent and great-value prices. Visitors can enjoy some 110km of slopes, with a particular bounty of beginner and intermediate runs. The village itself is spread out over 4km with a main street lined by hotels, bars and shops, as well as a car-free pedestrian area in the centre – a definite plus for families.

At an elevation of 1816 metres above sea level, and with skiing up to 3000m, Livigno delivers snow sure-slopes from the end of November right through to the end of April. Better still, it’s quite a cheap destination compared to other high altitude, snow-sure resorts.

Getting There

Holidaymakers interested in Livigno can fly with a number of low-cost airlines to places like Milan, Zurich, Munich or Innsbruck. Transfer times vary from approximately 3.5 hours (Zurich) to 2.5 hours (Innsbruck). Within the resort itself, there is a free bus service that runs until roughly 8pm, however it can get quite busy during peak times.

When to Go

Livigno’s winter ski season typically stretches from early- to mid-December through till the end of April. With a base altitude of over one thousand eight hundred metres and pistes in the area running up to a touch over two thousand seven hundred metres above sea level, skiers and snowboarders in Livigno can make the most of wonderfully well-covered slopes for the majority of the winter season.

Early-season

Livigno is a relaxed and welcoming Alpine town in which to spend Christmas or New Year among friends and family. There’s a pretty low-key and relaxed après ski and nightlife scene here, so there are perhaps better resorts to choose for groups of skiers and snowboarders looking to hit the beers and bubbly over the Christmas and New Year weeks. But overall, the reliable snowfall and expansive learner pistes make it good for families and groups of friends in the early-season weeks.

Mid-season

As the winter ski season proceeds through January and February, visitors enjoy swift lifts, excellent snow coverage, and a diverse range of well-covered slopes ideally suited to beginner and intermediate-level skiers and boarders. Swift lifts whisk skiers across the ski area, while cross country trails and terrain parks offer many different ways to escape to the great outdoors and make the very most of the snowy Alpine terrain.

Late-season

When spring ticks round in Livigno, skiers and snowboarders enjoy freshly-bashed corduroy pistes in the morning and softer, slushy snow in the afternoon – especially lower down toward the base of the village.

Where to Stay

Getting around

Apres

The après-ski scene in Livigno is decently lively, with a few great bars in town and at the foot of the gondolas.

The Tea del Vidal is arguably the number 1 après venue in town, with good music and a wonderful umbrella bar. The Stalet, located at the foot of the gondola Carosello 3000, is another great place for dancing and après-ski revelry, and live music bar Bivio is the place to go when you want to party until the wee hours.

For a more laid back beverage, Pub 1816 – the highest brewery in Europe – offers a chilled out atmosphere and good food to boot! Ypioca, meanwhile, is a great place to sit and enjoy a range of cocktails.

Eating out

Livigno is home to a good range of restaurants, from fine dining to great-value pizzas.

The Bivio Cantina serves exceptional food, which is complemented by a fine choice of wines. For a warm, friendly atmosphere, it’s hard to go past the family-run San Giovanni – and the food is wonderful!

For couples in search of something special, the Michelin starred Chalet Ristorante Mattias does a spectacular seven-course gourmet menu – you really must book ahead for this small venue, however.

If you have a hungry gang of mates on your hands, Bait Dal Ghet plates up large, great-value pizzas, and they leave shots on the table at the end.

Activities

Aside from plenty of pistes, Livigno offers an excellent range of non-skiing activities.

Mountaineering and ice climbing are popular choices, as are ice skating and dog sledding – they are winter holiday staples after all.

Other top choices range from paragliding and snowmobiling to ice driving and horse riding. There really is no shortage of ways to entertain yourself!

There are also a number of more relaxed activities in town for those seeking something more sedate, such as browsing the numerous shops along the main street and the Aquagranda wellness suite with thermal baths, fitness centre and pools.

A trip to the tourist office will offer lots of useful information on resort activities, but here is some info to get you started.

Getting around

Family ski

Livigno sits at a base altitude of 1,815 metres above sea level and the snow cover is generally very good from December through till April. There’s a wide range of gentle learner-friendly terrain which, when combined with the swift lifts, minimal queues, and strong ski schools, makes Livigno a refreshingly family-friendly ski resort to choose. The majority of the groomed slopes sit above the tree-line, which means it can be tough exploring the pistes if bad weather closes in – there’s not much shelter! Overall though, the resort is peaceful and pretty, with a warm welcome for parents with kids in tow. The town centre is largely traffic free so it’s nice and safe, and there are plenty of child-friendly restaurants with menus for smaller appetites.

Parents in search of childcare in Livigno can turn to the Kinder Club Lupigno, which offers a comprehensive range of childcare services and facilities to parents in need. The Lupigno children's area within the Ski School Centrale also offers a wide range of entertainments, and welcomes kids from the age of three to twelve into their childcare programmes. There’s a kinder club for childcare, and diverse options such as kinder club plus ski school, ski rental, and supervised lunches to offer parents the childcare and rental options to meet requirements. You’ll also find a child-oriented fun area offering exciting on-snow challenges like adventure trails and a tubing piste. If bad weather closes in, kids in childcare with the Kinder Club Lupigno can head indoors where further activities and entertainments await.

If the kids are in search of a change of activity from skiing or snowboarding, there are plenty of family-friendly options to choose from in Livigno. You can try your hand at go-karting on ice, with karts available for kids and adults alike, or zoom into the Alpine wilderness on a dog-sledding tour with the Husky Village Dog-sled Centre, located about 30 minutes outside Livigno. For older kids, snowmobiling is a high-octane activity which suits many adventure-seeking families in Livigno, and the resort also offers ice-skating for something a little more relaxing. At the centrally located Trepalle Gym, you’ll also find multipurpose sports courts offering racket sports like tennis, and the Aquagranda centre offers water-based activities for parents and kids alike.

Group Ski

Livigno sits at a very respectable altitude of 1,816 metres above sea level, with snowy slopes reach up to just a touch under 3,000 metres. With such impressive altitude, Livigno is able to offer groups of visiting skiers and snowboarders reliable snowfall from late-November all the way through until the season’s end in late-April.

Livigno’s ski lifts are modern and swift, allowing for hassle-free exploration of the ski area. This, coupled with the excellent snow-record, makes Livigno a worthy contender for your next ski trip. Slopes here are perhaps best suited to beginner and intermediate-level boarders and skiers – with an impressively large range of slopes beautifully suited to nervous learners. Experts here don’t go without, though, and there’s a decent range of steeper terrain and off-piste to explore as well.

While it may not be the prettiest Alpine town, the atmosphere in Livigno is lively and welcoming, and there is a decent selection of bars and nightlife venues. Non-skiers will also find a wealth of activities to enjoy, including mountaineering, ice driving, snow shoeing, dog-sledding, ice skating and paragliding.

Livigno is also rather easy on the budget, compared to many other alpine resorts of this size and altitude. Groups looking to keep a close eye on the spending are well-advised to give Livigno a look! There’s a good selection of large hotels for groups in search of stylish and well-located accommodation — such as the hotel Amerikan, the Intermonti, and the Lac Salin Spa and Mountain Resort.

On the down side, Livigno isn’t a hugely convenient ski resort to get around. It spreads out along the valley floor, dwarfed by the beautiful peaks above, and the evening bus service leaves a little to be desired, with services ending in the early evening. We recommend careful research on the location of your chalet or hotel, in order to place yourselves near the base of the resort’s lifts and gondolas.

Childcare

Livigno is home to a number of brilliant ski schools that take kids from 5-years-old, and there are some excellent facilities in town for the younger ones.

Kinderclub Daù, located at the base of lift 23, takes children from 3-years-old. They offer packages that include meals and ski school.

There’s also the Kinder Club Lupigno, also known as the children’s winter wonderland, which provides games, inflatables, a tube track and adventure paths. The Kid’s Club here is staffed by highly qualified individuals to give parents perfect peace of mind.

The Piste

While skiers of all levels will find something to like here, the resort caters more specifically to beginners and intermediates with great cruisy pistes and not too much in the way challenging runs. Cross country skiers will also have a great time, with some 40km of cross-country trails to explore, as will freestylers: the resort has six (that’s right, six!) terrain parks. These include two large parks, three aimed more at eager novices and one Woodpark.
