Resort Les Gets Resort Les Gets Resort Les Gets Resort Les Gets Resort Les Gets Resort Les Gets

Description

Les Gets is an idyllic ski resort located just over an hour’s drive from Geneva making it a firm favourite with families. With the short transfer time, abundance of cruisy, tree lined runs, and a buzzing village centre with plenty to keep you busy, it’s no wonder skiers and snowboarders return to this charming resort again and again.

Les Gets is one of 12 linked resorts in the Portes du Soleil ski area which boasts a huge 400km of piste and stretches across the Swiss border. The local area of Les Gets and Morzine is arguably one of the prettiest and is perfect for beginners and intermediates with 3 green runs, 29 blues, 28 reds and 9 blacks. They also boast 3 snow parks and the skiing starts at 1172m, with the highest lift sitting at 2002m. The altitude means the ski area sits right on the treeline meaning it retains good visibility even if the weather closes in, and is perfect for seeking out pretty mountain restaurants nestled in the trees.

The resort started as an old farming village, installing their first lift in 1936, and it has retained its Savoyard charm. Les Gets is a hive of activity all year round, and in the summer is extremely popular with bikers and walkers alike, even hosting the world famous Crankworx mountain biking competition.

Les Gets boasts a variety of accommodation from self catered apartments and catered chalets to 5* spa hotels, and it has an abundance of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Getting There

If you haven’t booked a package where flights are included for you then you will need to think about the best way to get to resort.

Fly

The most common method to get to resort is to fly. A major draw for so many visitors is the close proximity to Geneva so this is the most popular airport for guests visiting Les Gets.

Geneva – 55km – 1 hour 15 minutes
Chambery – 126km – 1 hour 45 minutes
Grenoble – 206km – 2 hours 15 minutes
Lyon – 202km - 2 hours 15 minutes

Transfers from the airport

There are lots of companies offering transfers to Les Gets, both shared and private. One of the benefits of opting for a private transfer is no waiting at the airport for anyone else to arrive, but if you’re on a budget then a shared transfer will probably be the way to go.

Les Gets have independent chalet companies, and often they have contracts with transfer companies meaning they can offer them at a very reasonable price, so this is always worth asking when booking your chalet!

Recommended transfer companies include:

Ski Lifts have been awarded the world’s best ski transfer operator in the world ski awards. They provide private and shared transfers from Geneva, Grenoble, Lyon and Chambery.

AlpyBus offer low cost shared and private transfers from Geneva airport, with prices starting from €21.50.

Skiidy Gonzales provide shared and private transfers from Geneva and private transfers from Lyon, Grenoble and Chambery.

Train

The nearest train station is Cluses, which is about 30 minutes drive which you can book with a transfer company. From the UK you can get the Eurostar to Paris, and then there are a few direct trains to Cluses, but more often you will have to change at Bellegarde or Annecy. A bonus with taking the train is you can take a ski bag, along with two suitcases, all included in the price.

Drive

Les Gets is very popular with skiers and boarders who want to drive from the UK. You can take either the Eurotunnel or the Ferry and then it’s approximately 8 hours drive from Calais. The fasted route is mostly on toll roads, so make sure you factor that into your costings!

When to Go

Due to its relatively low altitude, the ski season in Les Gets is slightly shorter than other higher resorts. However, its popularity with families means the resort will work hard to make sure it’s skiable for the school holidays, and whenever possible they will get the snow cannons going. The main gondola from the village centre quickly takes you up to 1550m, so even if snow is thin on the ground on the runs back to town, you can easily and quickly get up that bit higher.

The close proximity to Avoriaz, with skiing up to 2460m means that even if the snow in Les Gets is starting to get a bit slushy in the spring, a quick ski or bus ride and you’ll be at the lift up to much higher parts of the Portes du Soleil, meaning the resort is busy from its mid December opening, right through to when it closes in mid April.

School holidays always come at a premium of course, with half term and New Year topping the list for the most expensive weeks in the season, so if you’re looking to keep costs down then we would recommend looking at off peak weeks. Peak weeks are a brilliant time to go though as there is sure to be plenty going on in resort.

Where to Stay

Les Gets is a small traditional  village with the majority of the accommodation scattered around the centre.

Getting around

There are many options for getting around Les Gets:

Bus

The ‘Navette’ buses operate daily. The free buses work to fixed routes and times, covering most area within Les Gets including Les Perrieres, Les Cornuts, Les Granges, the village centre, Les Pthays, La Turche and Les Folliets. The buses operate every 30 minutes throughout winter and every 15 minutes during peak weeks. There is also a night shuttle service that operates between 1930 and 2330 and costs 3euros per adult (under 12s are free with an adult)

The Little Train

Everyday the little train runs across the village from Mont-Chery to Les Chavannes for free.

The Balad’Aulps bus operates daily and runs every 45 minutes. The bus costs only 2.50euro per journey and connects the main towns and villages in the local valley.

Taxi

There are taxis available in resort. It is recommended to book in advance and agree a price.

Apres

Whilst Les Gets isn’t known for its après and nightlife in the same way some of the bigger resorts are, there are certainly some hidden gems. For some lively après it’s definitely worth stopping off at Happy Hours Bar in Ardent, on your way back from Avoriaz. The bar lives up to its name and has some brilliant happy hours prices, and usually hosts DJ sets from the afternoon into the early evening.

Inferno is a favourite amongst seasonaires and another brilliant option for some après, located in the Les Gets – Morzine ski area. They kick things off early with a BBQ lunch every day, followed by DJ sets to take you into the evening. Just don’t forget to leave on time for last lifts – or the bar offers guided head torch descents to take you down to Morzine where you can get a bus or a taxi back to Les Gets!

For après on your doorstep make sure you visit L’ApreSki Bar, located right at the foot of the main slopes making it an easy stop on the way back to your chalet at the end of the day. This is also the prime spot for watching the weekly torch light descent with a vin chaud in hand!

The high street is lined with a number of popular bars, starting at one end with Bar Bush a British run bar which is loved by locals and visitors alike,  Bar Bowling which houses the village’s bowling alley and plenty of pool tables, and at night turns into a lively bar who pride themselves on their extensive shot menu. Igloo nightclub is just a few doors down and is where most nights on the town end up.

Black Bear is a more traditional mountain bar, and a good place for an evening drink and a game of pool, whilst underneath there is Le Pub Irlandais (a must on St Patrick’s Day!)

Finally Chez Jacque, located in the Chamois D’Or Hotel, is a little more sophisticated and has an extensive gin menu.

Eating out

Les Gets has a huge amount of restaurants and cafes to suit all budgets, ranging from fine dining to pizza and burger takeaways.  We’ve highlighted just a few of our favourites below...

On the mountain

La Grande Ourse is located on Mont Chery and opens for lunch, but it is perhaps most popular for it’s fine dining experience in the evenings, when they whisk you up the mountain in a private piste basher to enjoy a 5 course dinner. Book in advance to avoid disappointment!

Chez Nannon is the place to go if you want a steak lunch on the mountain, located at Nyon on the Morzine side of the ski area.

Altitude Lodge VIP’s chalet hotel features a lunchtime restaurant which is very popular with skiers and non skiers alike.

In the resort

La Pela serves a traditional Savoyard menu (make sure you try the fondue!). Very popular so make sure you book ahead, especially for staff night off!

La Case K2 is a little gem located at the Mont Chery end of the high street and makes probably the best burgers in Les Gets – reasonably priced too! They have a small restaurant and seating outside, but are very popular for takeaway too.

Les Copeaux serves traditional Savoyard dishes with a modern twist, the restaurant itself has a contemporary feel to it and is always full, so be sure to book in advance.

Activities

Staying in Les Gets gives you access to a fantastic selection of activities for non skiers of if you just fancy doing something a bit different.

There’s a lovely ice rink located right in the centre of town, a cinema, and even a Museum of Mechanical Music. There’s a selection of spas to choose from if you want some relaxation, including the Spa Sereni-cimes, or the hotel spa at the Chamois d’Or. There’s also Bar Bowling which has two lanes and pool tables, as well as a cordoned off slope just for sledging.

On the mountain there’s plenty of winter hiking trails (don’t forget to pick up your map from the tourist office) as well as snowmobiling and snowshoeing, and there’s even the Ranches des Portes du Soleil who offer mountain horse riding and ski joëring.

Paragliding is one of the most popular activities in resort and offers an opportunity to appreciate some spectacular views. There are plenty of companies offering this including some ski schools.

Ski School

Les Gets has a great selection of ski schools offering both private and group lessons to suit every ability. We would always advise booking ski school in advance, as it does fill up – especially in school holidays!

ESF has been running for over 70 years and has fully qualified English speaking instructors to help you improve your skills. ESF offer group and private lessons as well as mountain guiding for all abilities.

BASS British Alpine Ski and Snowboard School provide tuition for English speaking clients. They have a reputation for excellence and offer courses for beginners to pros. The school offers both individual and group lessons but the maximum in a group is 6 people so you will always get individual attention.

360 are an English speaking ski school offering private and group ski/snowboarding lessons for adults and children. They have a reputation for their friendly instructors who are great with kids.

LGS provide group lessons for children and private lessons for both adults and children. They also offer ski guiding to show you discover new pistes and the best mountain restaurants.

Family ski

Les Gets is a perfect resort for families with the resort being awarded the prestigious ‘Famille plus award’, recognised by the French Ministry of Tourism, and describe themselves as the ‘resort where children are treated like kings!’

The skiing is perfectly suited to beginners, with a nursery slope and the ESF Snow Garden right at the bottom of the main lifts, as well as at the top of the main gondola, Les Chavannes, or ‘the red egg’ as it is commonly known. This is perfect for watching the kids in their first lessons, or for family members who might not ski but want to take the lift up and take in the views – as well as relax in a deck chair and soak up the sun on one of the many restaurant terraces!

Les Gets even features its own area of the mountain just for children, Le Grand Cry has gentle runs and a Native American theme with totem poles and various activities dotted down the slopes, as well as small petting zoo!

There are plenty of wide sweeping blue runs, perfect for practicing those turns on, and as the resort sits right on the treeline the visibility generally stays very good even when the weather takes a turn for the worst.

For families looking for childcare in Les Gets can book into a creche, book with a tour operator who offer in-house childcare or book a private nanny.

Creche

There are two nurseries in resort:

Les Fripouilles is a nursery in resort for children from 6 months to 4 years.

ESF Snow Garden for beginners from 3 to 5 years and specialise in ski lessons for young children.

In-house Childcare

If you know you’re going to need childcare whilst you’re away, then it is usually easiest to book a package which offers in-house childcare as an optional add-on.
They will employ their own British nannies, and you will usually have the same staff looking after the kids all week.

Recommended operators who offer childcare:

Ski Famille, as the name suggests, are a family ski specialist. They offer ‘a la carte’ in chalet childcare from 4 months to 12 years.

VIP Ski offer a private nanny service, where you can choose which 8 consecutive hours you’d like them to work between 8am and 8pm. They will look after children as young as 12 weeks old.

Private Nanny Companies

If you’re not booking a package with childcare available you may want to consider booking a private nanny. They will offer a very personal and flexible service depending on just how much care you need, and whether you purely want a babysitting service in the chalet, or nannies to take the kids out for activities.

Private nanny companies in Les Gets include:

Jack Frosts provide nannies to come to your accommodation and provide a flexible service depending on your family’s needs. They will also bring all toys, games and arts and crafts materials.

My Travelling Nanny is a family run specialist holiday nanny agency who matches families with the perfect Travelling Nanny for their holiday.

Cheeky Monkeys offer a kids club in Morzine, as well as a private nanny service in your own chalet. They can also offer babysitting if you need this in the evenings.

Group Ski

Due to its popularity with families, Les Gets isn’t always top of the list for large groups of skiers. Whilst the Morzine and Les Gets area is perfect for beginners and intermediates, the more advanced of the group can easily ski over to Avoriaz to take advantage of some more challenging runs. Avoriaz is also home to The Stash, the famous snow park built from entirely natural materials. For something a bit different Les Gets also hosts the SkiColour every year in March, think the Colour run but on skis!

The village itself is much more of a traditional French town than a purpose built ski resort, with a large number of restaurants, cafes and shops, as well as a good amount of bars. Morzine is also just a short ski or bus ride away and has even more to offer in terms of après and nightlife.

For any non skiers in the group the villages features an ice rink, cinema, bowling alley, museum, and a weekly farmers market, so you’re sure to find something to keep you entertained whilst the others are on the slopes.

Childcare

Les Gets sits over the valley from Morzine in the pretty Portes du Soleil ski area, offering skiers a wide range of groomed slopes with gradient to suit all levels. The resort is a long-time holder of the coveted ‘Famille Plus’ label, which means it works hard to welcome parents and children into its facilities and services.

The childcare options in this pretty alpine town are many and varied, but perhaps the best for the British market are the resort’s chalets with in-house childcare services. Chalets like the Monet and the Bogart offer a broad range of childcare, with in-house services taking place directly within your chalet (as opposed to a public nursery). Infants from 4 months to 4 years of age enjoy safe play in and around the chalets, with supervised lunches. Children from 3 to 12 can book into ski lessons, with carers on hand to take them to and from the ski school meeting points. There are also afternoon clubs to keep kids amused and entertained until parents return from the slopes. These services combine to offer industry-leading childcare in the heart of Les Gets.

Alternatively, the Fripouilles Nursery and the P’tits Montagnys are run and managed by the local French ski school, and welcome children from 6 months of age – with half-or full days of childcare offering a flexible and reliable approach to childcare.

Les Gets’ child-friendly facilities make it a great choice for parents taking the kids to the snow. You’ll find a whole host of exciting adventures and activities, including snowmobiling, snow-shoeing, dog-sledding and more. The resort’s ice-rink sits in the heart of town, within easy reach of the chalets and hotels, and offers kids the perfect opportunity to try an engaging activity away from the groomed slopes. You can also head over to the neighbouring resort of Morzine, where local ice-hockey legends Les Pingouins take on teams from across France each week.

The Piste

Beginners

The best beginner area is located at the top of the Chavannes cable car. There are four gentle slopes here which are serviced by two magic carpets, a snow cable and a rope tow. The area is also entirely accessible to pedestrians.

Intermediates

There are plenty of runs in Les Gets to keep intermediates busy, in particular on the Mont Chery side. This is the furthest from the main interlinked network so is generally a bit quieter.

Experts

Les Gets offers some excellent terrain for experts, with a total of nine black slopes (plus a further 25 in the full Portes du Soleil region). Mouflons is one of the toughest runs in resort but there some steep runs on Mont Chery and from La Rosta on the Chavennes side.

LGS provide group lessons for children and private lessons for both adults and children. They also offer ski guiding to show you discover new pistes and the best mountain restaurants.

Equipment Hire

There are several ski hire stores in Les Gets offering ski and snowboard equipment to suit all abilities. You don’t need to pre-book equipment hire however we would always recommend it as it saves time on what can be busy transfer days, and there are usually discounts for booking in advance.

Hire shops in Les Gets include:

Sport 2000 provide affordable ski and snowboard equipment from all major brands.

Nevada Sports offer ski equipment adapted for each level. They guarantee that there equipment is all well maintained, and also offer free storage between the slopes of Chavannes and Mont-Chery with shoes disinfected every night.

Skiset are one of the top brands for ski rental providing the latest selection of equipment.

Delavay Sports rent and sell quality gear to fit your needs whether you are learning to ski or are a pro. They offer a wide selection from some of the greatest brands, most of which is renewed every year.

Lift Passes

There are two options for lift passes, either the local Les Gets and Morzine area, or the whole of the Portes du Soleil.

For beginners, young children, and those who don’t plan on skiing full days, the local area will be enough, but for intermediates and above we would recommend the Portes du Soleil pass so you can venture over to Avoriaz, or even take on the famous Portes du Soleil circuit.

Below are the most recent prices for lift passes if bought in resort; however prices may vary at the time of booking.

6 Days                 Les Gets/Morzine Local Pass   Portes du Soleil full area
Adult (16-64yrs)   €216                                         €260
Child (5-15yrs)     €162                                         €195
Senior (65-74yrs) €186                                         €234

Free passes are available for under 5yrs and over 74yrs, proof of age is required.
It is always worth asking about lift pass offers when booking, as often there will be deals on group or family lift passes, but these often change throughout the season.
