Resort Le Corbier Resort Le Corbier

Description

Le Corbier ski resort, designed in the '60s by the famous modernist architect Le Corbusier and named after him, Le Corbier ski resort started life as one of those medium sized 3rd generation resorts with a mere 75km of good skiing. But today's Le Corbier's ski resort local lift pass includes all areas such as La Toussuire and St Sorlin d'Arves. Which gives you 310km of piste. St Sorlin d'Arves connects by lift and piste with Le Corbier ski resort and La Toussuire as well. This makes Le Corbier the 4th largest ski area in France!

Le Corbier ski resort's snow record is superb. The village sits at 1550m, the top station is at 2600m, there are plenty of snow cannons and the snow mostly faces the right way.

No-one could describe Le Corbier as an eyeful of classic chocolate box charm! Le Corbusier had something else altogether in mind: the village is uncompromising and stark in an arrestingly dramatic setting, beautiful in its own way. Le Corbier ski resort is also practical and convenient. Vehicles park outside the traffic-free village which curves around the foot of the mountain so that the nursery slopes run right up to the wooden terrace.

Getting around

Apres

This small and purpose-built ski resort is targeted at the family market and has less in the way of bars for a younger crowd looking for a lively après ski session. If après ski is high on checklist for ski destinations, then you will want to look further afield to other larger ski resorts. There is a very small selection of bars in the resort itself, with a couple of DJs and a few evenings of live music. If you’re not expecting a wild party night, then Le Corbier may suffice...

Le Yeti is a restaurant with a bar area that plays football matches on the TV screens. They bring in a guest DJ a couple of nights throughout the season.

If you want to sit back and relax after a tough day of skiing, Le Roche Blanche bar has a cosy fireplace and is good for a post ski beer and wind down.

Le Fontaine de l’Ours is a regular haunt for Dutch visitors to resort getting rowdy on the Desperados on tap. This place will either gear you up for a later night or make you want to go home for an early night, ready for first lifts the next day!

If Le Fontaine bar has set you up for a later night, you may want to head onto Le Corbier’s only proper nightclub – ‘Le Sweet Club’. The DJs play a mix of funk, hip hop and house music and they stay open until the early hours. But be warned – the drinks are expensive in comparison to the other bars in resort.

Eating out

Le Corbier is a purpose-built ski resort, great if you’re looking to ski on a budget and have quick access to the slopes. The apartment blocks are compact and the resorts non-skiing activities are almost non-existent. This resort is tailored towards holiday makers who are happy to self cater, so certainly not a destination for skiers who are looking to be enchanted by a traditional alpine atmosphere and Savoyarde delicacies.

If you do choose to eat out, there are a few pizzerias in resort, some of which offer up more traditional dishes such as fondue and raclette. However, Le Corbier isn’t exactly renowned for its cuisine, so if you want your taste buds tickled, you probably want to venture further afield to its bigger, more well-known neighbours in The Three Valleys or Les Deux Alpes.

Activities

The resort of Le Corbier is small and compact and has a small number of activities to keep non-skiers entertained throughout their days in resort.

Paragliding is a fantastic way to see the beautiful scenery of the Savoie Alps. With the help of a qualified instructor you will glide above the pistes and have a stunning birds-eye view of the valley floor. A tandem flight costs around €65 and they meet each day at the top of Le Corbier.

If you are a bit of a thrill seeker, the snow mobile tours in Le Corbier are certainly an adrenaline rushing experience. A qualified instructor will guide you through the snowfields of the resort and surrounding areas and run every day from 17.30. Prices start at €45; take a look at their website for more information. www.motoneige-corbier.com/

The fitness centre in Le Corbier has a range of bodybuilding equipment and fitness classes if you want to keep in shape during your trip. But if you fancy something a little more relaxed, the Galaxie Spa next door has an outdoor swimming pool heated to a delightfully warm 29°C. There is also a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room within the spa.

The Ariane cinema screens films every day except Saturday and shows films in both French and English. It costs around €8 for adults and there are discounted rates for children, students and groups.

Childcare

Le Corbier is a good resort for families on a budget. The compact nature of this purpose-built ski resort makes it super easy for ski access. The traffic free centre makes it safe for children and there is a good selection of wide and gentle beginner and intermediate runs which don’t tend to get too crowded. The activities off the slopes are limited though, so it can be tricky to keep children entertained for a full week if bad weather sets in.

There are a number of designated sledging areas in resort, which is a fun and inexpensive way to get the kids to burn off excess energy at the end of the day.

There are provisions for childcare too at the ‘Halte Garderie’. The crèche is open for infants as young as 6 months and they accept children up to 5 years of age. They offer childcare for half or full days and are open between 09.00 and 17.00 from Sunday to Friday.

If you are looking to ski on a budget but need a resort with slightly more entertainment for your children you might want to look further afield to Le Corbier’s neighbours such as Les Deux Alpes or Les Menuires, both of which have a good range of non-skiing activities and packaged/independent catered chalet operators.
