Apres

Champagny is a small village tucked away behind La Plagne and has a small selection of bars for après ski. It’s not a resort for party animals but if you’re happy to sip on a beer and listen to a bit of live music post-skiing, then take a look at a few of our highlights below.

La Timbale is in the centre of resort and is one of the more lively bars in resort. The large sun terrace gets crowded in the afternoons and on Wednesday nights they have live bands and guest DJs so you can dance late into the night. Likewise, Le Pitchoun is the resort’s other bar with live music and is popular with both holiday makers and the locals.

If you’re looking for a big night and want to dose up on some classic 70s disco and 80s pop classics, the Galaxy bar is the resorts very own discotheque. Open from midnight until 5am it’s good for those wanting to extend their après ski session late into the night!

If you want après to be a slightly classier affair, the Bar du Vin has a selection of delicious cocktails and fancy wines.

Eating out

Tucked behind La Plagne, the quaint ski village of Champagny has a selection of restaurants to consider for the chalet staff’s night off or a pit stop on the mountain at lunchtime. Typical of the smaller French resorts, the traditional dishes of fondue, raclette and grilled meats are popular on most menus in resort. However, there are a couple of pizzerias for something more basic or family-friendly.

Le Bouquetin offers up traditional Savoyard cuisine and is open daily. The dining room is cosy and traditional with chequered tablecloths, an old stone fireplace and a large sun terrace with stunning panoramic views of the valley. It’s great for a raclette and the wine isn’t bad either. Booking is recommended as it is small and very popular, particularly with the locals!

Les Roches serves up typical French cuisine. Located at the entrance to the resort in the Hamlet of Rocks, the chef serves up generous portions. If you’re looking for something a little more romantic, the upstairs is smaller and has a more intimate atmosphere.

La Piat is great for a lunchtime snack and doesn’t break the bank if you’re holidaying on a budget. It’s in the resort centre just next door to the Intersport ski shop.

Pizzeria La Barillon is a perfect for families – their pizza and crepes will keep the kids happy and if adults want to be a bit more adventurous, they also serve the traditional Savoyarde specialties of fondue, raclette and tartiflette. Located near the tourist office in the centre of town, you have lunch on the sunny terrace, or enjoy your evening meal in the traditional wooden interior.

Activities

Paragliding
If you’re feeling adventurous, one way to take in the stunning mountain scenery of Champagny is by parapenting (paragliding). This thrilling experience is particularly good during the spring months, once the mountain air has warmed up a bit as not only is it less chillly for the passengers but the warmer temperatures helps the paraglider to ascend above the valley floor. You will be attached to a qualified instructor who will help make the jump and control the chute as you gracefully glide around the snow capped peaks.

Snow Shoeing
If you’re heading out to Champagny but not able to take advantage of the skiing, snow shoeing is an excellent way to get up and out on the mountain, giving you a chance to breath the crisp mountain air and take in the beautiful scenery. If you head to the Tourist Office in resort, they will have a number of walking path routes so you can go it alone, or if you prefer you can book an instructor to guide you along the way.

Husky Sledding
Husky sledding regularly takes place in Champagny and is a lovely way to take in the mountain floor. You get to take control of your own team of huskies who have a passion for running to your cries of “mush mush” – be prepared though as it’s not as easy as you think, you will need strong arms to keep a hold of the sledge whilst you whip through the forest paths! In Champagny there is also the choice for ‘complete immersion’ where you get to spend the night camping out in a mountain hut or for the braver ones under the canvass of a tent!

Cinema
If the weather sets in, why not head to the resort’s cinema to catch up on one of the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Cinema ‘Le Rhodo’ screens movies in English a few times a week; please check with the cinema directly in resort for times.

Ceramic and Painters Workshop
If you want to get your creative juices flowing, both the ceramic and painters workshop will allow you to channel your inner artist. If you are in resort and not skiing, but want to take on a challenge throughout the week, Miss Herrero will guide you in the method of clay sculpture from start to finish. Whether it’s just half a day or a 6 day course you want to do, there is a class to suit.

Childcare

Champagny is a small village towards the back of La Plagne, at the far end away from Les Arcs, and whilst the slopes are good for families, there aren’t a huge number of activities to keep the children entertained off the mountain. If they do get bored, you may want to look further afield to La Plagne.

If the weather sets in and the kids don’t feel like doing anything energetic, head to the library in resort where you can loan books and magazines from the dedicated children’s section. It’s open Mondays and Fridays from 18.00-19.30 and Wednesday mornings from 10.00-11.00.

Alternatively, the kids can get a bit creative at the ceramic workshop. Art teacher Lorena Herrero will teach the children to craft ceramic objects from clay, bake them in the kiln and decorate. This is great for budding sculptors and something slightly different to try out. The workshop is open on Monday-Wednesday from 16.30-18.00 and costs 23 Euros per child.

There is a good crèche in the village for children aged 18 months to 6 years. When the weather is good, kids will head outdoors for snow games and sledging. If the weather is not so kind, kids will be kept entertained indoors with arts & crafts and musical games! The crèche is open every day throughout the winter season between 09.00 and 17.30.
