World's Fastest Ski Lift Cranks Up in Austria

If you’ve ever spent a week among the soaring peaks and rolling slopes of Austria, you’ll already know just how impressive the country’s ski lift system is. Modern, comfortable and impressively swift gondolas and chairlifts dot the terrain, whisking skiers to lofty altitudes in a matter of moments.
While we’ve been enjoying the best of the British summer, technicians and engineers have been busily beavering away in the Skiwelt region of the Tirol – Austria’s largest ski area – and have recently revealed their latest creation.
The Jochbahn lift ferries skiers up the Brixner Sonnseite at an eye-watering 6 metres per second, and takes top spot as the fastest in the world. Fully detachable for faster queues, the lift is built by Doppelmayr and transports a whopping 3,000 skiers an hour.

As if all this were not enough, the Jochbahn is self-sustaining! A field of solar panels off to the side soaks up the sun’s rays and powers the mighty lift, saving pots of money and valuable natural resources. No juice needed! The new lift also extends far past its predecessor, carrying skiers further, faster.
So when those first flakes start falling in a few month’s time, spare a thought for those poor souls skiing in Italy and France. As those old ankle-biter chairs trundle slowly up the hillside, skiers in Austria will be travelling in style!
