Why Val Thorens is an Award-Winning Resort

Val Thorens was the star of the recent World Ski Awards, landing the coveted World’s Best Ski Resort accolade for the fourth time in five years. It's received plenty of awards and recognition over the years, so here we're taking a look at what makes this Alpine destination such a winner.

Snow quality

With a lofty base-altitude of 2,300m, Val Thorens is the highest resort in Europe and boasts some of the most snow-sure slopes in the world. Whether you visit for a magical Christmas holiday in December or a bluebird spring getaway in April, you can expect pristine pistes ready for carving.

Ski Access

Not only does the snow stay in excellent nick, but Val Thorens’ swift modern lifts and abundance of ski in/ski out chalets make getting out on the slopes incredibly easy. Even after a big night of partying, it’s near impossible to stay in bed when you can be out on the piste and cruising in no time.

Slopes for all abilities

Every level of skier is catered to in Val Thorens. Beginners benefit from a highly accessible nursery area, intermediates can sharpen their turns on wide blue pistes and there are a number of more challenging trails for seasoned pros – not to mention superb off-piste areas when the fresh powder falls.

Of course, you also have the rest of the expansive Three Valleys area at your ski tips – for a total 600km of terrain between VT, les Menuires, Méribel, la Tania and Courchevel.

Après Ski

Even when you’ve had your fill of pow for the day, Val Thorens still has plenty to keep you entertained long into the wee hours. The piste-side Folie Douce is the place to be in the afternoon, offering cold beers on the terrace, slick DJs, table-top dancing, Champagne sprays and all the house beats you can handle.

The party continues in town at lively joints like Café Snesko and Saloon, and the Malaysia nightclub (the largest club in the Alps) keeps on kicking until 5am.

Accommodation

Then there’s the great-value accommodation, which caters to a range of group sizes and tastes. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious modern hotel or a cosy timber chalet-apartment with fireplace and sauna, Val Thorens provides.
