(2020-03-20 16:51:57)

With festive celebrations among friends and family, and the good chance of a sprinkling of fresh snow, there are some wonderful ski resorts to choose from for Christmas in the Alps. Here, we’re looking ahead to the winter 2020 / 2021 ski season to offer a few suggestions for the perfect Christmas in the mountains. Different groups have different requirements, so which resorts work best?

Resort: Obergurgl

Best for: Families

Obergurgl is an Austrian resort with a small but dedicated selection of 100% family-oriented accommodation options. You’ll find in-house nurseries and supervised lunches, with packages including kids’ ski lessons and after-dinner clubs. With UK flights and transfers included for simplicity, it’s a dream destination for families hoping to maximise their enjoyment of the Alps.

Resort: Verbier

Best for: Après skiers

If you’re looking to hit the bars as hard as you tackle the slopes, the Swiss resort of Verbier is worth considering. The resort has an expensive reputation, but like any large Alpine town there’s something for everyone — from classy cocktails and chic surroundings to welcoming pubs with live music. It’s famous for its off-piste itinerary runs, too, and works well for advanced riders.

Resort: Val d’Isère

Best for: Groups of friends

The French resort of Val d’Isère is a great all-rounder, perfect for groups with a long list of requirements. It has diverse terrain for all skill levels — from nervous learners to seasoned powder-hounds — plus a wide range of bars and non-skiing activities to enjoy. Neighbouring Tignes is a great shout for those looking to spend less.

High-altitude Val Thorens is also a great resort choice for snow-sure slopes during the festive season.

Resort: Ischgl

Best for: Intermediate cruisers

Of those who visit Ischgl, few fail to fall in love with the place. The lift system is rapid, and excellent snow-making facilities generally mean snow-sure skiing even in the very early weeks of season. There’s loads of terrain at upwards of 1,500m, and plenty of intermediate-friendly blue and red runs throughout the ski area. Add in excellent ski schools, and you have an intermediate’s haven.

Resort: Cervinia

Best for: Learners

The resort of Cervinia sits in Italy’s Aosta Valley, at a dizzying 2,050m. Aside from stunning Matterhorn views, the resort is great for kids and learners mastering their first turns on the snow. There’s a superb nursery slope close to the village itself and, for learners keen to push on to the groomed slopes, a wonderful selection of gentle, cruisy terrain throughout the area.
