Description

Kaprun is an Austrian ski resort nestled at an altitude of 785m, with glacier skiing and snow-sure slopes reaching an impressive 3029m. A popular tourist destination, Kaprun shares close ties with neighbouring Zell am See — under the name Zell am See-Kaprun — and many visitors to the resort like to ski both areas during their stay.

The village itself is a sprawling affair, with buses plying the route around town and over to Zell am See, though the surrounding scenery is spectacular.

Up on the slopes, visitors have access to just over 130 kilometres of groomed pistes including marked runs on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. With decent learner slopes and a small area of intermediate terrain at Maiskogel, Kaprun is largely geared towards learner and intermediate-level skiers and boarders. The Kitzsteinhorn glacier offers more challenging terrain, but overall there’s limited scope for confident experts.

Uplift is offered by a series of gondolas, chairlifts and draglifts, though the drags make Kaprun tricky for snowboarders yet to get the hang of the old-fashioned t-bar!

With sometimes crowded busses and bottlenecks blocking easy ski access, Kaprun can be tricky for families with children in tow. There’s a good range of intermediate and learner terrain to choose from, and good ski schools offering a broad range of classes, but families need to be careful where they stay in order to enjoy the best of the ski access.

There’s an impressive selection of snow-parks for keen freestyle in search of kickers, rails and pipes, with hits and jumps to suit park-lovers of all levels. There’s the Easy Park for beginners, with rainbow boxes, rails and kickers ideal for practising on. The Central Park is ideal for progressing intermediates and confident freestylers in search of bigger hits, with a medium line, a pro line and a jib line all available. The Glacier Park offers a further selection of challenges geared towards intermediate and expert riders. Lastly, there’s a testy superpipe 22 feet in height and 160 metres long — perfect if you want to push yourself.

Kaprun offers a limited but good range of catered ski chalets, with flights and transfers available from a number of different UK airports. For independent travellers, the majority of the accommodation options are dominated by hotels, gasthofes, pensions and self-catered apartments. Neighbouring Zell am See offers further accommodation ideas for those keen to see alternatives.

Reaching Kaprun is easy from the UK with Salzburg Airport just a 1.5-hour drive away. Alternatively, Innsbruck Airport also works well — only 2 hours’ drive from the resort.
