Description

Perched up in the Dauphiné Alps and
surrounded by stunning high mountain scenery, Vaujany has been home to farming families for generations and still retains its rural atmosphere.

The substantial income the village receives from Électricité de France, is due to the construction of an unobtrusive hydro-electric power scheme lower down the valley. This has enabled it to steadily expand its range of facilities.

Vaujany is linked to Alpe d'Huez by a 160- person cable car.

Apres

Vaujany is one of the quietest resorts in the French Alps and not synonymous with the apres ski scene. The small handful of bars in resort are not what you would call buzzing and whilst they are okay for a casual beer after a day on the slopes, don’t expect to find live bands or big crowds of rowdy revellers looking to party late into the night.

Arsen’s Pub may be small, but it has a good selection of beers on tap, free WIFI and coverage of sporting events on the TV screens.

The younger crowd tend to hang out at the Swallow Bar or L’Etendard bar but if you are looking for something a bit more lively in the afternoon we would recommend you look at the nearby resorts of Alpe d’Huez or Les Deux Alpes which have a lot more going on!

Eating out

Vaujany is the smaller neighbour of Alpe d’Huez. It’s a quiet and sunny resort, with a couple of good mountain restaurants and a small selection of restaurants within the village itself. If you want a vast choice, you will have to head a bit further afield.

Steif’s Steakhouse Cafe
If you’re looking for good value, simple food, Steif’s Steakhouse has just that. They serve up larger burgers with chips alongside good quality Belgian beers. Great for a lads’ night out or if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by the number of fondues in resort!

La Remise
Regular skiers in Vaujany head to La Remise, where you will find a mix of traditional Savoyard and Italian dishes on the menu. As there are so few restaurants in the resort, it is advised you book as it does tend to fill up. They serve simple food that’s not too pricey, though service may not be top-notch.

Auberge Passoud.
If you’re feeling adventurous and want to try out dishes local to the village of Vaujanay itself, then a mile or so out of the village you can find Auberge Passoud. The restaurant uses fresh, local ingredients (so local they come from the owners back garden).

Chalet du Lac Besson
On the mountain, Chalet du Lac Besson is a tranquil and remote restaurant with fantastic views of the mountain and is situated just off the cross country circuit. They serve up delicious Savoyarde dishes.

Auberge de L’Alpette
If you want something quick and simple on the mountain, the Auberge de L’Alpette, located at the cable car station, offers a mean omelette and good salads. Perfect for a family lunch stop as the runs close to the restaurant are pretty easy, so parents can sit back and enjoy a drink in the sun whilst the kids make their way down the easy pistes under a watchful eye.

Activities

There is a fantastic new sports centre with swimming pool, sauna, fitness hall and gym, as well as an open air ice rink.

Childcare

For a relatively small resort, Vaujany has enough to keep young children entertained should the weather turn bad or they can’t manage a full day of skiing.

Sports
The resort has a sports complex with a 25m indoor swimming pool and a long water slide, and there is also a four lane bowling alley which is open every day. A brand new Olympic sized ice rink was built in early 2013 and it is close to the leisure centre. It is open Monday-Saturday from 14.00-19.00 and on Sunday from 10.00-12.00. On Tuesday and Friday evenings the rink is open from 20.30-23.00. It costs around €7 for entry onto the ice (including skate hire).

Library and Museum
There is a library within the resort, with a children’s section which also includes games and DVDs –an inexpensive way to keep the kids entertained!

Keeping on the educational track, Vaujany also has its own museum called the ‘House of Fauna’. Here, children can learn about the wildlife in the Oisans ski area through a virtual tour of the mountain. It’s open in the mornings and afternoons on Sunday to Thursday.

Childcare
If your children are too young to join you on the slopes, the village nursery has a good crèche and will take children as young as 6 months old up to 5 years. It’s not too expensive at around €135 for 5 days of childcare with lunch included. The crèche itself has a number of playrooms, including a large ball pool and soft furniture play area. Not all the staff will be fluent in English but they have a good enough command of the language to communicate with the children.
