Skiing with Infants and Toddlers

Skiing holidays can be a fantastic experience for the whole family, old and young. Just because they haven’t yet invented ski booties, it doesn’t mean that infants and toddlers should miss out on all the fun. Whilst Mum, Dad and elder siblings enjoy the slopes your little ones can have fun building snowmen, tobogganing and playing outdoor games to get used to the cold, wet stuff.

A wide range of family friendly resorts cater for infants as young as three months, with some even offering services for newborn babies. You can enjoy peace of mind knowing that qualified staff are on hand to provide care for your baby or toddler with many resorts offering full qualified British nannies.

When researching resorts study the piste map to get an idea of how easy it will be to ski back to your child's nursery quickly if they are unsettled. Also, look at how long it will take you to reach your resort of choice, factor in the flight and the transfer time from the airport to your hotel, will your children become restless? And finally, If you are staying in a hotel or catered chalet, look into the flexibility of meal times for children and babies.

Tips for taking care of infants whilst away

  • Keep babies well hydrated at altitude. Due to the lack of oxygen in the air they will need to breathe faster.
  • As tempting as it may seem, don’t overheat your chalet – a baby’s bedroom should be 14-18C. Alpine air is dry even without heating, the dry air may irritate your child’s sinuses and lead to a blocked nose and cough.
  • Go outside with your baby every day; just make sure they are dressed properly!
  • When out and about, keep your baby’s head and hands well covered – sunglasses and suncream are essential.
